Leaking Water Main

This last Friday we noticed water flowing from the plant bed in front of our Golf Shop and did some investigating to find that our main water line for the club had developed a leak. Already knowing it was a 6" main with a 2" reducer in the area we had decided to leave it be over the weekend. Being it was Friday and a possibility that trying to make a repair could result in no water for at minimum a few hours and at maximum until Monday it was far smarter to let it leak until Monday when we could shut it down for the full day. What we found was much like we anticipated, a 6" line that was reduced to a 2" to feed the club. the 2" PVC adapter had split. What you see below is the new fitting and telescoping adapter. Luckily we had the parts on hand and had the water back on by lunch. Our Assistant Ricky and a few helping hands did a great job of the repair and getting the area back like it was before.

Digging a Pond

The pond on the right of #10 is finally starting to shape up. With just the sloping of the top shelf of the bank left to do before we cut the dam into the other section of the pond, I hope to get that part completed this week if the weather gives us the opportunity.

As you can see we are getting a lot of soil moved into the old fairway bunker on #12. I get a lot of comments on how big it will be but rest assure that when we start shaping that soil it will end up about 20% lower then you are seeing it currently. We still have more soil to move to complete the mounding that will replace the bunker. This soil will come from the opposite side of the pond when we enlarge the first pond towards #7 tee and the pine tree grove.

The enlargement of this pond area will also serve as water retention area for our bigger rains and hopefully help to keep the old ditch area a little dryer.

Just another small step in building a better golf course.

Moving Dirt!

With the beginning of the new year we are starting a few projects that has either been put off or had been left for the winter to complete.

On #10 we are expanding the pond in order to use the soil to complete promised projects. The first and biggest project you may have noticed is the new tee boxes on #1, #6, #15 and #17 which will be the senior ladies tees. The Ladies had Donated $400 towards the fuel for these projects this last summer.

On #17 you may have already seen us dig up the soil we had pulled out of the small pond and mounded two years ago. Part of this soil was used for the new tee box while the rest was used to cover over the concrete we placed along the bank to fight erosion.

The next Project will be the start of the mounding on #12 Fairway bunker. The plan as of now will be to build the mounds and let them settle (they will shrink) before moving forward.

We also have plans on installing the pipe on #6 for the new walk to what will be a new tee box across the pond.

I expect to be working on these projects throughout the month of January.

Board of Directors Elections

   January 25, 2012 will be the Annual Membership and elections meeting at the club. Please be sure to attend or cast your vote in absentee.

   As of now we have one person running for each position of President (Grant Faucheux), 1st Vice President (James Hymel), 2nd Vice president (Ronald Chaupetta), Treasurer (Richard Bratcher), and Secretary (Charles {Chuck} Rousselle), and three to be elected from Allen Constantine (up for re-election), Martin Crawford (up for re-election), Alan Marrero (up for re-election), Larry Lehans, James Fuselier, Arthur Parker. During the elections at the club, you may nominate anyone from the floor for any position.
   Anyone that cannot attend the elections may cast their vote in absentee by checking with the office with Mae Capati, after January 5th. Please remember that in order to vote you must be a stock holding member in good standing with the club (your account has to be up to date).

Mr. Leo Reed passed away this week. Funeral Services and visitation will be held at St. Joan of Arc on Thursday December 29th between 9:15am and 11:am for any who wishes to attend.

Santa's Visit

Santa is coming to Riverlands

This coming Friday Santa is coming to Riverlands. He should arrive between 6:00pm and 6:30pm with little gifts for the wee ones. Remember to bring your camera to take pictures and our kitchen will be open later then usual for anyone who wishes to eat. There may be a few more surprises and we will be showing the movie "POLAR EXPRESS" for the small ones to watch while the parents mingle with their friends.

Issues still persist with our statements in December

We again would like to apologize for the issues with the December statements. we did not know until they were mailed that the program did not download the reoccurring fees to your bill. After finally getting the software to print out the rest of the fees we were able to print all new statements, which will be mailed out on Tuesday December 6th. we run once again apologize for the errors and thank you for your patience while we sort out the issues.
While not an excuse for our mistakes, I would like to explain that this program is only run once per month, which does not give us much time to learn the ins and outs of it. We are starting to get familiar with the system and hope we do not have any mistakes during 2012.

Christmas Spirit

Hello, everyone. Its that time of year again where we get to enjoy the Holidays and all of the festivities that goes along with them. We again find ourselves decorating the club for the up and coming parties and to help spread the Holiday Spirit amongst our members. While I love the season and the decorating I always find myself wanting to do more decorating then we have decorations. This year we found that most of our older decorations had to be thrown away including our Christmas Tree which was over 17yrs old. We like to keep things as simple around the club as possible.

If you are putting up your own Christmas Decorations and find some you do not need anymore please feel free to donate them to the club but please do not bring us the broken decorations cause it takes too many man hours to troubleshoot.

This morning we had a hydraulic hose on our tee mower blow out on #15 tee box. We moved the blue tees forward onto the senior tee box to allow the oil to dry so members will not track it onto the green. sorry for the inconvenience.

Holiday season is already upon us

This year has flown by. Thanksgiving is next week and Christmas is right around the corner. Where has this year gone?

I have been busy organizing the Office over the last week and the Board of Directors has moved my best cup cutter inside to take over the office (great move). Many members has already visited Mae Capati in her new office and made some pretty great comments to about her work attitude and dress attire. It is great having someone who works as hard as Mae in the office now. My work will not be completed with the office though, I have intentions of getting into the storage areas and organizing them also. It seems like we have a lot of clutter in almost every area of the club, and to be honest this is normale with a lot of business. You get in the habit of not wanting to throw anything away, and you start pushing things into corners. But every now and then you have to step back and clean house just to see what you have.
I want to remind everyone that I am not taking over the club as many has suggested to me. That has and will never be my goal at Riverlands. I am really good at cleaning house (just ask my wife) and helping out but my heart is outdoors where I want it to stay.

Overseeded Tees

I apologize about posting this late but I have been very busy working in the office.

We overseeded all of the par 3 tees as well as the Driving Range Tee. You may have seen that these tees are a little wet from the extra irrigation watering we have been doing to help the seeds germinate. We will also be adding more seed over the next few weeks.
Breaking up the applications into multiple times is done for a few reasons, the most important is so that one big rainstorm does not wash off the seed unexpectedly. I remember one year at Chateau when we seeded our greens and got 2" of rain after. We ended up using a shop vac to try to get the seeds back up and then we re-applied the next Monday only to go through it all over again. This happened four times in a row. After that year we learned to break up the applications just in case.

Change in office personnel

I wanted to relay to our membership that Dana Jacobs has resigned from the club and we are in the middle of an office reorganization in which I am overseeing. My Assistant, Richard Troxclair has been handling the golf course duties while I have been spending my time with the office duties. Things will get better as we move along but again I have to ask for you to please forgive us for any mistakes we make during the transitions.

Welcome to our 2011 Club Championship Tournament.

     We are challenged this year due to not currently having a Golf Pro but Rob and myself have teamed up to try to give everyone a very good weekend of golf.
     I want to say that the course setup for this tournament was all my doing, so if there are any complaints do not take them to Rob it is not his fault. He is currently handling all of the player set up and will be at every ones disposal for any rulings that may be needed. I had teamed up with him on deciding GUR areas and any course issue we may of had. I find it very good to be a part of this years Club Championship Team.
     The course is set up for a three day Tournament for the presidential flight and two days for the rest of the flights. I chose the pin locations by trying to get a mixture of easy to hard placements with the least amount of old cup marks and ball marks around the placements. This tournament is supposed to allow us to find out who is the best golfer on the course and everyone will be chasing Richard Bratcher again this year in trying to dethrone him.
     Remember that this is a multi-day tournament and tomorrows set up will be a change up from today's with Sundays being the highlight of the show. Do not look forward to the course getting more difficult as the weekend progresses, that is not the purpose of setting up a course. My goal was to give a good course set up while also understanding as the limitations on golfers as the weekend move forward. You will not see the tee markers moved to white or red tee boxes. If you practiced for this tournament this week you will play it in a similar fashion. While some holes may be hard others will be easier. and these will change from day to day.
    If you are reading this post you are lucky in that I will give a few tips to my followers. Today we are playing from the yellow spots while tomorrow will be the red spots and Sunday will be the blue spots. Think out your shots to the green, On #16 we have a back right placement that can only be putted from the right side of the green (unless you are lucky) this may be the hardest placement I have for the weekend. The course is currently drying out and I will not be using the irrigation system during the duration of the tournament. we will hand water hot spots on the green is all and very lightly. So the course should play firm and fast while getting faster as the tournament progresses.

#1 Bunker Renovation Project

These are the before and after pictures of the bunker on the left side of #1 green. As you can see we replace all of the drainage adding 300% more piping and bringing the lips down to the level of the sand. I want to say that my crew really busted their tails in getting this project knocked out this week knowing we have our Club Championship Tournament next weekend.

Bunker system on #3 completed

We have now completed the bunker system on #3. It may still take a little time for the sand to compact but I feel that we made a big improvement over what we had.

you can see with the before and after pictures that we went from a mud hole to a better designed bunker which now gives my equipment more room to turn around behind the green. We hope we have also fixed a few of the wet areas we had before.

Long time crew member moves on

Crew-Member Rick Landry has been forced to leave Riverlands. Rick has been a great employee to Riverlands for almost six years. Last year was extremely tuff on Rick, losing both his Mother and Father in a short period of time. Due to finally selling their home he is forced to move into Kenner where he has said he will seek employment back in the nursing industry. I know many members knew Rick Landry and will miss him around the club and we all wish him well in his future. At this point, I have no plans on filling his position until next spring.

cleaning up from our bunker project

Today you may see my crew cleaning up the areas where we pulled sod for the project behind #3 green. We are just trying to clean up our mess before we move onto the next project. Another thing you may notice is that we have moved the concrete chuncks into the pond on #6 where we intende to make a bridge crossing to what will be a new tee box.

The only thing left on #3 will be adding the sand into the bunker. we are waiting on the sod to root in a little more before we run our equipment over it. It will be soon though.

Please do not use Mosquito Spray while standing on the turf

This is a picture of #14 green in which someone had sprayed their ankles with Mosquito Spray. The tan color is dead grass. We constantly see areas around #1 Tee box and the Putting Greens where members have decided to spray their legs with mosquito spray. Please step onto the cartpath when doing this.

Quad-Verticut Greens today

Like my last post had mentioned we planned on verticutting the greens this morning. We went over them 4 times and have been working to get the debris back off the greens for tomorrows play. I would expect the greens to slow down a little from the verticutting. this will hold true as we again try to work back down to our regular HOC.

We are also back to cutting the roughs again. We should have everything cut before the weekend.

#1 Green scalped

I wanted to give a heads up to all that our mower scalped #1 green again yesterday. The 4 days of rain from Tropical Storm Lee kept us from cutting the green until Wednesday in which we had raise up our HOC to .150". On Thursday we cut again with our other mower at the same height and the mower scalped the green. We changed mowers halfway through only to find the other mower scalped it also. We had to again raise our height of cut in order to eliminate the issue but that leaves us cutting the highest on over 4 years. The greens have become so thick it is causingthe scalping. if you notice in this picture all of the scalped areas are located in the dark green areas whcih happen to be the tickest areas. Monday we will be verticutting the greens severely in order to try to thin them out and solve the problem. The scalped areas will heal over in a few days.

Continued work on #3 bunkers

We completed the sod work on the middle bunker and slope area behind #3 green yesterday. With tropical depression #13 sitting on our doorsteps we used every worker available yesterday to sod some of the area behind #3 green yesterday in order to keep it from getting washed out. With the left bunker still to be completed as well as the space between the left and middle bunkers we can only hope for little wash out. We are installing an island type area in the middle of the left bunker. this will cut down on the overall size of the bunker and the cost to upkeep it down the road. The sod area that we are adding will also hlep with our equipment turning around behind the green. We still have the drainage to improve in all of the bunkers and new sand to add but with possibly four days of rain expected we needed to wrap up what we could for the time being.

More bunker renovations

As promised we are now starting the renovations of three bunkers by #3 green.

Time has taken its toll on these bunkers. recently they have stopped draining and the biggest one has basically been turned into a mud pit. We are digging them out and sloping all of their lips like the one we just completed on #8. We hope to complete all three before next weekend. Why so long? Well to be honest we still have other duties on the course and the heat indexes in the afternoon are over 100 degrees. We just have to be smart in order to complete them.

Double verticut and topdressed the greens today

We have completed verticutting and topdressing the greens today. with the extra sand on them we will have to hold off on cutting them for a day. Tomorrow morning we will be spraying them with a fungicied and insecticide to fight off cut worms and dollar spot.

Aerification holes on the greens

I have received a few comments about some of the holes left open after the aerification process this last week. I would like to assure you that having a few open holes will not hurt our greens. While we try to fill as many holes as possible, it is almost impossible to get them all. The turf will grow over the hole and will still allow more water to enter the root profile. This is not a bad thing and the root system will actually fill the hole up over a few weeks. There is a misconception that this is why the greens are bumpy and also that the sand needs to be all the way to the top of the leaf blades in the exposed holes. This is impossible to accomplish and still be able to mow the green. The turf has to grow across the hole in order to smooth the green out the rest of the way. without the turf the sand will not stay in place. Cutting the greens with too much sand only causes the high performance reels to pick up the sand and throw it in our grass catchers. In the process of picking up this sand, it eats away at the steel reels causing grooves and wear on the reels. These reels then have to be backlapped for long periods of time to remove the grooves so they will again cut precise. This takes man power and valuable life off of the reels. If we had a half million dollar budget I would just buy more reels as needed and not care about what the sand does, but in todays world at Riverlands we have to make sure we do not waste any money. I have the hardest job of them all in making the decision either to cut the greens and cause more issues with the reels or not cut the greens for a few more days and inconviencing our members for those extra days. I know that our greens were slow and bumpy this last weekend. I would prefer to have them perfect at all times but in todays world the reality is that in order to have good to great greens we have to suffer those few days or weeks of giving them exactly what they need to survive. I am constantly being told how much better our greens are then this club or that club and I notice the pride in those members telling me that. They know that these aerifications are neccessary evils and the sole reason for our greens staying in great shape.

So when you make a judgement about why we do not do this or do that, just think for a second about the rest of the year you are playing on some of the best greens around. I know a good 20 clubs that would die for our daily conditions of our greens year round and one of those clubs is right down the street.

Rebuilding Bunker Lips

One of our biggest problems with our bunkers have been the high lips that constantly wash out and allow the finer soils to contaminate the bunker sand which then slows down or completely stops the drainage system from working correctly. This is the bunker on the left side of number 8 green in which we are forming a new slope and will be covering it with sod. We have several of these lips to repair as well as other issues with a few of our bunkers that we hope to slowly address this year.

Angle Parking in the cart shed

To all of our members who have their carts stored in our cart shed. We are currently going through the motions of angle parking all carts in the cartshed. The north side of the cart shed will now be used for the Clubs cart fleet. We apologize for the inconveince of the members who will have to move out of these spots. We have over 40 empty spots in the cartshed that you may move into.
If you have a cart stored in our cartshed we ask that you please contact Randy Smith with your information so we can update our list of cartowners. If you are storing a cart in the cartshed illegally we ask that you remove it before we find out. Any illegally stored carts will be locked down. You may either email me or call me with your information.

Aerification almost done (update - completed) (2nd Update)

We only have two putting greens to complete before our last core aerification is complete. We have all of the plugs washed off the greens and will be picking the piles up tomorrow morning. We will also be topdressing the greens heavy tomorrow morning and starting to wash the sand into the greens. Most likely we will have the back nine closed tomorrow morning until we complete the work on them and then we will switch sides and with luck we will have all 18 greens completed by 5:00pm.

Greens are completed and have been triple topdressed. We have been dragging the sand in since 9:30am and have about 60% of the holes filled. We will continue draggin again tomorrow.

Dive-In Movie at our pool

On Friday July 29th Our pool department will be hosting a movie by the pool night.

The feature movie will be "Finding Nemo" and will start between 7:00pm and 7:30pm

Members are free to attend, guest will be $2 per person for the event only (a $5 guest fee will be in place until 7:00pm) bring the little ones out for a splashing good time) Swim and watch a movie!

Angle Parking in the cartshed

We are now starting the angle parking in our cartshed. The maintenance crew has already parked 3/4 of the carts into the new angle direction. Some may find it easier to exit the cartshed from the first roll up door and enter through the second door. We will try this new parking design out for a few weeks and get some feed back on it from our members before completing the rest of the shed.

Replacing the roof on our lunch room

We are having to replace the corrogated roof on our lunch room this week. The old roof started coming apart and was leaking water into the building. I will try to get pictures later.

More greens maintenance this week

This week we have verticut the greens and we are currently topdressing them and will be rolling them. This is normal maintenance we do throughout the year to help keep our greens healthy.
Wednesday we sprayed the greens with the herbicied Revolver to kill off the goose grass. We will also be spraying them pretty soon to start removing the weed named green killinga.

Special thanks go out to the MGA for sponsoring the Fireworks Display once it gets dark Monday night. All members and guest are invited to attend and are asked to bring a dish, all meat will be provided. Members with last names beginning with A-G -please bring a vegetable dish, H-P please bring a Starch dish and Q-Z please bring a desert dish. This will be a blast so make room on your schedule to spend the fourth of July at the club.

More Cartpath Repairs

We are again working on repairing the cartpaths. We are currently replacing sections on holes #2, #4, #5 and the apron to the first door in the cartshed.

Irrigation leaks

We will be trying to repair a few leaks we are experiencing in our irrigation system. Right now we have two minor leaks around greens #3 and #16 which we will be working on today. #3 has been responsible for the wet area on the back right of the green and #16 has been responsible for the water in the bunker on the back left of the green. If you notice any other areas escaping our attention please feel free to inform me so we can add it to our list.
We are still in a drought and have been using the system nightly so shutting it down for repairs gets difficult. After a tenth of an inch of rain yesterday evening and us running the system overnight I feel that this is the perfect time to make the repairs.

Aerifying and Topdressing the Greens Today (Monday 6/20)

Family time on the golf course

I want to take a few minutes to bring up a very important safety suggestion. During the summer when school is out we start seeing a lot of members bringing their young ones out for some golf and family time. In some cases the young ones are very young. After watching a young gentleman and his son today I had noticed a very important safety issue, which I discussed with him, and I want to relay to everyone else. When riding with the little golfers or passengers be aware that when you leave the cart you are placing him in a dangerous situation. Most young ones try to imitate their dads and play at driving the cart. As much as I love to see the bonding time it is more important to make sure you left him safe and in most cases this is not the way it is.
"When you get out of your cart please turn off the key or place the cart in nuetral so if the little tike accidently steps on the gas pedal the cart does not take off injuring him or worse". It is more important to keep him safe then to play golf so a little thinking can go along way.

Hydraulic oil leak on #12 green this morning

We had a reel motor hydraulic hose burst on #12 green this morning. we took the usual steps of washing it down with Dawn and hosing it off. Only time will tell how much turf we will lose in this area. The thing to remember is that the grass is killed instantly when the hot oil hits it. We are only trying to save the root zone of the plant and keep golfers from tracking the oil across the green by flushing it out with dawn. If we do not see any new growth within two weeks we will be re-sodding the green with turf from either the back of the green or one of our practice greens.

Spraying the greens with fungicide and growth regulator

Today we are treating the greens with a fungicide that should help control the algae and we are also treating them with a growth regulator. We are prepping them for our aerification next week.

God said: "Frank, you know all about gardens and nature. What in the world is going on down there on the planet? What happened to the dandelions, violets, milkweeds and stuff I started eons ago? I had a perfect no-maintenance garden plan. Those plants grow in any type of soil, withstand drought and multiply with abandon. The nectar from the long-lasting blossoms attracts butterflies, honey bees and flocks of songbirds. I expected to see a vast garden of colors by now. But, all I see are these green rectangles."

St. FRANCIS:

It's the tribes that settled there, Lord. The Suburbanites. They started calling your flowers 'weeds' and went to great lengths to kill them and replace them with grass.

GOD:

Grass? But, it's so boring. It's not colorful. It doesn't attract butterflies, birds and bees; only grubs and sod worms. It's sensitive to temperatures. Do these Suburbanites really want all that grass growing there?

ST. FRANCIS:

Apparently so, Lord. They go to great pains to grow it and keep it green. They begin each spring by fertilizing grass and poisoning any other plant that crops up in the lawn.

GOD:

The spring rains and warm weather probably make grass grow really fast. That must make the Suburbanites happy.

ST. FRANCIS:

Apparently not, Lord. As soon as it grows a little, they cut it-sometimes twice a week.

GOD:

They cut it? Do they then bale it like hay?

ST. FRANCIS:

Not exactly, Lord. Most of them rake it up and put it in bags.

GOD:

They bag it? Why? Is it a cash crop? Do they sell it?

ST. FRANCIS:

No, Sir, just the opposite. They pay to throw it away.

GOD:

Now, let me get this straight. They fertilize grass so it will grow. And, when it does grow, they cut it off and pay to throw it away?

ST. FRANCIS:

Yes, Sir.

GOD:

These Suburbanites must be relieved in the summer when we cut back on the rain and turn up the heat. That surely slows the growth and saves them a lot of work.

ST. FRANCIS:

You aren't going to believe this, Lord. When the grass stops growing so fast, they drag out hoses and pay more money to water it, so they can continue to mow it and pay to get rid of it.

GOD:

What nonsense. At least they kept some of the trees. That was a sheer stroke of genius, if I do say so myself. The trees grow leaves in the spring to provide beauty and shade in the summer. In the autumn, they fall to the ground and form a natural blanket to keep moisture in the soil and protect the trees and bushes. It's a natural cycle of life.

ST. FRANCIS:

You better sit down, Lord. The Suburbanites have drawn a new circle. As soon as the leaves fall, they rake them into great piles and pay to have them hauled away.

GOD:

No!? What do they do to protect the shrub and tree roots in the winter to keep the soil moist and loose?

ST. FRANCIS:

After throwing away the leaves, they go out and buy something which they call mulch. They haul it home and spread it around in place of the leaves.

GOD:

And where do they get this mulch?

ST. FRANCIS:

They cut down trees and grind them up to make the mulch.

GOD:

Enough! I don't want to think about this anymore. St. Catherine, you're in charge of the arts. What movie have you scheduled for us tonight?

Ione Bean keeps it looking great!

The Tee bed on hole #17 is by far the best on the course, and this is all thanks to Ione Bean. I do not know what she is feeding that Crepe Myrtle but it looks better then any other on the course. She has also started branching out with her green thumb by adding flowers and plants to other tee beds and the back area of the club house. But make no mistakes about it #17 seems to be her pride, I guess looking at it every day makes it worth all of her hard work.

We also have others that have stepped up and started to fix a few tee beds. #2, #3, #5, #9 and #10 have had some sort of work done to them in the last year with Grant Faucheux's #10 tee bed coming in behind Ione's #17 bed. I know that Kim and Duane Leier have done a lot of work on those beds as well as Duane Leier hauling Ralph Bean out to pull weeds with him.

Thanks everyone they look awesome. If we get a few more people taking care of these beds I may need to start a yearly Tee bed contest.

Throwing your trash on the course?

I know no one does this at Riverlands but wanted to ask everyone to please use the waste receptacles at every tee box to get rid of trash. This also includes any fruit peelings. I do not know why but some people throw their fruit peels on the ground saying the squirrels will eat them. NO THEY WILL NOT! you are simply littering with an excuse. They look terrible and take a long time to degrade. Everyone could be helpful to our course buy using the waste receptacles for their trash and feel free to pick up any other litter you may see.

Weed Control Starts today

We have started our weed control for the fairways and slopes today. We are using a three-way mixture of chemicals that should take out 80% of the current weeds in our fairways and slopes. The areas sprayed this week will brown out from the bruising of the harsh chemicals we are using. In some cases we will have to follow up with a second application to get complete control of our targeted weeds. Due to the drought we have been experiencing, we are limited to spraying the areas that our irrigation system covers. hopefully we will pull out of the drought pretty soon and be able to spray the rest of the course.

Topdressing the greens today?

Here is the scoop, we have been double cutting the greens all this week getting the prepared for this weekends Member Guest tournament. I was hoping the holes would cover better but the cooler weather slowed the growth down to some extent. Since it is almost impossible to cut greens after topdressing when there is dew on them I had held off wanting to get the double cutting done throughout the week. We are topdressing them lightly today and dragging the sand in with our drag brooms. Our weekend schedule will be us rolling the greens in the mornings and dragging and cutting them in the evenings after the tournament round is completed. Due to the growth regulator we sprayed last Friday we are only getting 1/3 of the cutting basket full of leaf tissue after cutting all 21 greens (we generally get that much on one green). So the overnight growth on the greens will be minimal and the greens should roll truer if not faster also. Remember my goal was not to produce extremely fast greens but true rolling greens. the speed is just a combination of double cutting/growth regulator/topdress sand.

Also if you are not playing in the tournament please remember that the course will be closed the rest of the day so we can drag and cut the greens.

Getting ready for the Member Guest Tournament next weekend

We generally turn our attention to preparing the golf course for our Member Guest Tournament two weeks before the tournament. In order to be ready this year we have already edged the bunkers and are presently weedeating the lakebanks. Our goal is to clean up the course as much as possible for the event. This seems like the first drought period before our member guest in a long time. It makes it harder for us to get everything green. We are running our irrigation system every night and we are supplementing that with short day time cycles.

Lines on the greens? "please read"

Yesterday many may of seen unusual lines on the greens. While I had came into work yesterday morning, it was for a very short time due to J-Rock coming to my house to do some sheetrock work for me. I was not aware of these lines yesterday. This morning though is another issue.

First let me tell you the cause of the lines. Simply put our water hose that was being used sprung a very bad leak. For some reason the operator of the hose continued to use it even though he should of stopped and swapped hoses out (he got his butt chewed out for that). The leak in the hose caused sand to be pushed out of its desired location which caused grooves in the greens where the water hit. This morning we are attempting to get the sand back into place using the water, but this is not the right fix. The proper way to get them back to normal will simply be dragging them again with our drag matts. A very simple and easy fix with one exception, the greens need to be dry in order to use the drag matts.

I have no excuse for this issue and take full responsibility for any inconvenience this may have caused you and your golf game, and apologize. I should of made a point to check out my crews work before leaving for my own personal needs. I hold myself completely responsible and realize that taking a little time off now and then is not always the best thing for the club.

That being said, another truth is that we do not own one water hose without a leak in it. Most of our water hoses have been repaired multiple times and are in desperate need of replacing. I will be addressing the board this week about new hoses. Having bad hoses is my fault since I have never even requested their replacement. The water hoses we use are a 1" diameter and should be able to withstand up to 200lbs of pressure and cost around $200-$250 each. It is hard to approach the board about needing $500-$750 for water hoses when we have so many more pressing needs, we just try to make due. The damage is minimal and quickly fixed and I hope to learn from this lesson. Grant Faucheux just hates to get bad news from me and it seems like that's all I have these days.

Honey bees swarming

Yesterday we had a small swarm of honey bees attach themselves to a small tree on #8. They most likely had a new queen land here and the rest just started to cover her over. This swarm was about the size of a football and growing. We cautioned off the area and believe they will move the hive quickly. Nature has its moments.

Still too much sand on greens for morning cuts

The combination of cool weather and lots of sand used to fill in the aerification holes has left the greens with a very sandy top which is impossible to cut when the morning dew is on the ground. This was what it looked like after a few passes on the green this morning. As you can see, nothing but sand which is very bad on razor sharp reels. Once the cooler weather moves out the greens will fill in faster and we will be able to get back to our normal morning cutting routine.

Drought

I want to pass on to everyone a little information on the drought we have been experiencing. It has been over a month since we have experienced any type of rainfall. The swamps are almost dry as well as the level in the lake. It is my task to keep our turf growing throughout Mother-Natures different extremes. Since we are lucky enough to have an automated irrigation system in which we can water completely at night in order not to inconvience our members. Due to this watering schedule we will at times find sprinklers that either stayed on all night or never came on in the first place. Most members will not see our fairways get watered since they are generally coming on after midnight. On any given day of watering the whole course we will use around 750,000 gallons of water. All this water is provided to use through our parish drainage canals, so lets hope they stay full OK.

So I am starting a twitter account which should allow me to tweet more information on a daily basis to our membership. What you may see is details on the daily task we do or do not do like mowing in the afternoon or cutting fairways and fertilizing. Please give me some time to develop a routine and getting the information out there. My hopes is that you may be able to find out if the greens were cut or we are on or off cartpaths faster and easier then going to my blog site. Greens aerification update

Ricky and myself spent yesterday hand topdressing the areas on the greens where the holes where still showing. This is very time consuming but it helps to fill in the rest of the holes without adding too much sand to the greens. We are hoping for rain to help wash the sand into the greens so we can cut them. We are at a point now where we want to cut the greens but all we are picking up is sand which eats up the reels and bedknives. We are also limited to doing any kind of mower work after the dew is gone since wet sand sticks to just about anything. You will be seeing more afternoon work on the greens until we can get the holes to cover over. With temperatures expected in the high 40's or low 50's the turf may slow down its growth to some extent. The greens are still looking pretty good for being only one week away from aerifying. I give the recovery a C+ at this point.

Greens Aerification Completed

Monday we aerified all of the greens and today we were able to topdress them all despite the storm front that threatened us most of the morning. Due to lack of manpower we are dragging the sand into the hole instead of our normal washing method. Tomorrow we will be verticutting the greens to lift sand that has been trapped under the leaf blades back up to help fill in the holes. I expect the greens to be in decent shape by Friday.

Repairs to the clubhouse roof

After finding 9 leaks in the outer section of the clubhouse roof it was decided to make a general repair to the fabric seem. We used 9 buckets of Henry's asphalt roof coating and cover the entire seem around the whole building. Once this sets up long enough we will move the gravel back to the top of the material.

Swimming pool repairs

Many members may have seen us working around the pool this week and have been wondering what might be going on. For years we have been needing to replace a section of the deck around the pool where the swim meet kids start their contest. The slab had sunk over 4" in many places and was pretty cracked up. This was brought to the attention at the last board meeting and One member in particular said to get it tore out and he will help get it fixed. So we spent the whole day yesterday running a jack hammer busting up the slab. We finished removing the concrete this morning and I have a meeting tomorrow about how we will get this fixed. This was a very urgent need due to the liability to the club. Hopefully it will be completed by the weekend.

Aerifying the roughs & Fairways

It is that time of the year again when we start preparing our course for the new spring growing season. We have started aerifying our roughs this week and are scheduled to aerifye the fairways next week finally completing the Aerification schedule with our greens on Monday the 25th. We aerifye the soil to allow needed oxygen to the root zone and allow the toxic gases to release from the soil. This improves water penetration as well as the overall health of the turf root system. You will notice that for around a month or two after aerifying the roughs and fairways that the ground dries out faster after the rains allowing us to get off of the cartpaths much quicker. Our next step will be putting out fertilizer on the fairways.

Another Crawfish Boil Attention, Correction to post

I just got word that next Friday we will be having our second Crawfish Boil. Due to the cost of the crawfish the prices will be $15 per person for 4lbs of crawfish (and the corn and potatoes and other good things they add). Lots of Rain Tuesday night but it's looking like a great weekend for golf

Tuesday evening we received 2.65" of rain and hail from a sever front that moved through our area. Our only damages were lots of thatch that was washed onto our roughs and fairways. My crew has been busy cleaning up the course and when it was too wet we did a few needed maintenance task in the clubhouse. We are able to start cutting the course and it should be in decent shape for all of the weekend play.

I was asked to pass on the information that the RLGA will be having a meeting next Tuesday 29th to finalize the plans for the April 5th Ladies Guest day. The meeting is expected to begin after the mornings golf round unless it rains in which it will then be held at 11:00am.

Leprechauns and Ladies Tournament

Crawfish for fuel was a hit

I wanted to let everyone know that the Crawfish for fuel cookout we had last Friday generated $600 towards our fuel bill.
I would like to personally thank the following members for putting up donations and time to help my department keep our equipment running.

I want to make sure everyone completely understands that everything was bought by sponsors. All funds generated were profit going towards our fuel bill.

This crawfish boil was so successful that we are now looking for more sponsors for future member gatherings.

Please help us with improving our driving range tee

We are closing down the back half of the driving range tee in order to allow it to heal from the damages of this last winter practice. Please help us by not using the back part of the tee. We have added a lower section in front of the tee we will be using during the week. We ask that you either not use drivers when on the lower sections unless you aim towards the back left where our sod green is. PLEASE REMEMBER that we have maintenance workers around my shop area and it get dangerous with balls flying in. I have had many come into my office and have been lucky for no damages as of yet. We expect the back portion to be closed for 3-4 weeks at which point we will close the front portion for the same reasons. Thank you

A little reminder of tonights crawfish boil. They added another sack of crawfish to the boil and have 10-12 more tickets for those interested, but you better call the proshop and get them now if you want to come out, since they are going really fast. The kitchen will also be open cooking a variety of seafood specials. Looks like it will be very festive with a good crowd.

Tuesday my wife and I drove to Texas to pick up our newest addition to our family. We have adopted a four old male Rhodesian Ridgeback named "Java Joe" He is actually larger then any of my past kids but full of play and love. I took these pictures as we were picking him up and driving home. We adopted him from the Rhodesian Ridgeback Rescue Service which help us last year to place Aeriel in her new home in Alabama. We were lucky we passed all of their requirements for an adoptive home. I have great respect in how they strive to save as many "best friends" as possible and make sure they are placed in a good loving home. I highly advise anyone looking for a best friend to first search the rescue services of the breed they desire. These rescue clubs make sure the pets are well taken care of unlike the animal shelters (nothing wrong with those either). They are kept by foster homes who love animals and only desire that they get the right home as well as the adopting family get the right pet. By adopting a four year old dog instead of a puppy we do not have to deal with the normal potty training issues as well as the destructive nature of dogs under two years old (that is not to say older dogs are not destructive either). Almost every breed of best friends have their own rescue service club, all you have to do is search the internet.
Do not expect to see him out here too soon though since he has to go through bonding time and obedience training first.

Taking out the speed bumps on our cartpaths

This week we are busy taking out the bumps in our cartpaths that cause so many problems. We currently have 5 sections on holes #1, #3, #18 to be repaired today (Thursday). We are also getting ready to pour the apron to the second entrance door of the cartshed (we will do the other door a little later). The plan is to pour the cartpaths after lunch today. I want to again thank Allen and Grant for their help and motivation in getting these issues solved.

Crawfish for Fuel?

Our Club President has hustled up sponsoring for a crawfish boil/sale this coming Friday evening for the purchase of fuel for our equipment. They will be boiling 5 sacks of crawfish which will be sold at 4 pounds for $10.00 which includes potatoes and corn. They will be boiling it Friday evening about 6:30pm. The kitchen will also be open late this friday with lentien specials and a cash bar to coincide with the crawfish boil.We may also have a putting contest (if enough interest). Since we will only have 5 sacks of crawfish being boiled we ask that you sign up in the pro-shop if you are interested.
